Lot 2: Water heaters and hot water storage tanks

In February 2012, new working documents on ecodesign and labelling requirements were submitted. Voting in Regulatory Committee is expected in early 2012.

The minimum performance and labelling requirements for boilers and water heaters were discussed in one proposal in Consultation Forum  29 February 2008. Revised proposals for water heaters were submitted in  2008 (see Lot 1 for information about boilers) and 2012.

A water heater is defined as a product connected to an external supply of drinking water to generate heat and transfer this water to desired temperature levels. The hot water is typically used for cooking, cleaning, bathing and space heating (and several items in industry).

In the proposal from February 2012, point 1 of Annex II specifies requirements for water heaters. They are proposed to be introduced one, three and fixe years after the entry into force of the regulation and include:

  • energy efficiency
  • storage volume
  • sound power level
  • nitrogen oxide emissions
  • product information

Storage tanks requirements for standing loss and product information are specified in point 2 of Annex II.
