Report on technology prospects for directional lampsFive reports on technology prospects for directional lamps have been prepared for eceee in Summer 2010. The reports were funded by the European Climate
Foundation and produced in cooperation with Defra, the Department for
Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (UK) and the Swedish Energy Agency. Defra, eceee and the Swedish Energy Agency have communicated with the European Commission on how to provide additional background technical information to support the coming regulation on directional lighting. A series of reports – tasks 1 to 5 – that will help to supplement the preparatory study have been produced, are available at the Defra dedicated page for directional lighting, as well as below. View also: Task 1 presents a summary of the international directional lamp regulations in Australia, Canada, and the United States and discusses the respective scopes of coverage, the test methods used and the minimum energy performance standards (MEPS). It also includes comparisons made between the regulatory programmes and discussions of key differences and distinctions between the programmes. Task 2 includes clarifications, background information and discussions of the beam angle definition of directional lamps. It evaluates how this issue was addressed in the Eup preparatory study and in organisations outside of EU (Australia, Canada and the United States). Task 2 also presents a comparison of voltage-adjusted efficacy ratings for directional lamps. Task 3 presents the summary of the review of shipment and inventory estimates of directional lamps, from the EuP Preparatory Study, Market Transformation Programme draft data and Navigant Consulting’s in-house lighting database. The report describes the development of an inventory stock-model for Europe, tracking operating hours, lamp lifetime, sales and sockets. In the final section inventory estimates based on revised inputs are presented, along with a comparison of the findings from this analysis to the results given in the EuP preparatory study. Task 4 reviews how the EuP Preparatory Study treats directional lamps in the domestic and tertiary sectors. This review focuses on 1) coverage of directional lamps in the analysis; 2) operational characteristics of tertiary sector lamps; 3) end-user or system aspects of the tertiary sector which are not reflected in the analysis; 4) discussion of technical features of tertiary sector directional lamps; and a brief discussion of ceramic metal halide and LED directional lamps. Task 5. Technology prospects of directional lamps: The Report is provided by eceee and provides a snapshot in time and presents summaries of new and forthcoming lamp technologies.
