Oxford Brookes University seeks Research fellow in Building Performance Evaluation

Due Date: 07 February 2012

This is a fixed-term appointment for two years. Closing date 7 February 2012

We are looking for a researcher of exceptional talent to conduct a two-year research fellowship and work closely with Professor Rajat Gupta (http://architecture.brookes.ac.uk/staff/rajatgupta.html), at OISD: Low Carbon Building Group (http://oisd.brookes.ac.uk/lowcarbonbuilding/index.html) based in the School of Architecture.

You will be working on various externally-funded research projects on building performance evaluation and post-occupancy feedback. These include: HEIF5 funded ‘Counting the real carbon’ project which seeks to develop bespoke and industry-focussed measurement and monitoring protocols embedded in a soft-landings framework, for both domestic and non-domestic buildings; and a range of UK Government Technology Strategy Board (TSB) funded Building Performance Evaluation projects, which aim to reduce the credibility gap between designed and actual performance by evaluating the actual energy and environmental performance of case study buildings from both technical and occupants’ perspectives. Professor Rajat Gupta is the Principal Investigator (PI) on the projects.

The Low Carbon Building Group (LCBG) at Oxford Brookes has a strong international reputation in the field of carbon counting (RIBA award-winning DECoRuM model), building performance evaluation, climate change adaptation of buildings and neighbourhoods, and low carbon communities. The current portfolio (close to £3.5 million) of LCBG’s research is funded by ESRC, EPSRC, TSB, HEFCE, EST, British Council, and industry. The group has close links with the Environmental Change Institute of University of Oxford through the ESRC funded EVALOC low carbon communities project led by Professor Gupta.

The role
You will hold research responsibilities, including planning and carrying out monitoring and occupant feedback surveys in case study buildings across UK, keeping accurate research notebooks, data analysis, interpretation, report writing and writing papers in refereed journals with the PI. Further to this, you will be responsible for developing bespoke measurement and monitoring protocols embedded in a soft-landings framework, for retrofitted and new-build domestic and non-domestic buildings. Your expertise will also be important to the day-to-day management of the projects, on which you will work closely with Professor Gupta.

The requirements
We would like to meet an experienced researcher with a BSc/BA degree in architecture, architectural engineering, building science or similar discipline. You will also need an advanced knowledge of energy use and carbon emission reductions in UK buildings gained through study for a related higher degree (MSc/MPhil/PhD).

Experience of working in a research environment in academia or industry will be essential, alongside a background in monitoring and/or post-occupancy evaluation of buildings.

Please note: Previous applicants need not apply.
