The Regulatory Authority for Electricity and Gashttp://www.autorita.energia.it/inglese/index.htm The Regulatory Authority for Electricity and Gas, is the independent body which regulates, controls and monitors the electricity and gas sectors and markets in Italy. The Authority's role and purpose is to protect the interests of users and consumers, promote competition and ensure efficient, cost-effective and profitable nationwide services with satisfactory quality levels. Its mission includes defining and maintaining a reliable and transparent tariff system, reconciling the economic goals of operators with general social objectives, and promoting environmental protection and the efficient use of resources. The Authority also provides an advisory and reporting service to the government and parliament, and formulates observations and recommendations concerning issues in the regulated sectors for which the legislator is directly competent. It plays an active part in creating a standardised system of energy sector regulation in the European Union and integrating the national electricity and gas markets into a single European market. A founder member of the Council of European Energy Regulators (CEER), the Authority also takes part in the European Regulators Group for Electricity (ERGEG).
