Race is on for most energy efficient TV in 2015

(eceee news, 13 Mar 2015) In September 2015, the fifth SEAD Global Efficiency Medal competition will recognize and award highly-efficient flat panel televisions. Best TVs were awarded as recently as 2012, but due to the rapid development of TVs, the Clean Energy Ministerial’s SEAD project has a new call for nominations open.

The Super-efficient Equipment and Appliance Deployment (SEAD) is an initiative of the Clean Energy Ministerial and a task within the International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation. SEAD has organised competitions for the world’s most efficient TVs, monitors and induction motors. SEAD lighting awards will be announced in May 2015 and the fifth Global Efficiency Medal competition will recognize and award highly energy efficient flat-panel televisions.

Televisions account for 3 to 4 percent of global residential electricity consumption. Since consumers tend to replace their TVs every 10 years, most of the electricity that will be consumed by TVs in 2030 will be from appliances that are not yet purchased. Hence, there is a great cost-effective energy saving potential in encouraging consumers to consider more energy efficient models when buying their next television

SEAD Global Efficiency Medal competition seeks to increase efficiency improvements by recognizing and guiding buyers to the most energy efficient flat-panel TVs. One outspoken goal is also to demonstrate the levels of efficiency that are achievable with existing and new technology.

By recognizing both commercially available and emerging technology televisions, the competition seeks both accelerate efficiency gains through existing technologies, and introduce new technologies into the market.

Regions and categories

SEAD Global Efficiency Medals will be awarded to the most energy efficient flat-panel televisions in each of four regions: Australia, Europe, India, and North America.  Global Efficiency Medals will be awarded in each region to the most energy-efficient small, medium, and large commercially available TVs.

The competition will recognize televisions in three size categories: Small, medium, and large commercially available TVs and four regions: Australia, Europe, India, and North America. For each size category, an overall international winner will also be awarded. The fact that winning products must be commercially available is an important criterion in order to assure that winners are not just prototypes but products ready for the market. This requirement is coupled with a minimum requirement for delivered volumes in each award region.  There may be more efficient products listed or announced elsewhere, but SEAD also tests each product before it is announced, and the volume criterion helps ensure that winning products actually delivers savings.

In addition, one international winner will also be awarded for the most energy-efficient new technology. These are not commercially available products; here promising emerging technologies are awarded.

Winning products will be announced and honoured in September 2015 and at a global awards ceremony in May 2016.

Nominations

Nominations are open until 31 March 2015. Applicants and resellers can nominate products for consideration in any region, regardless of the location of the manufacturer, provided that the nominated product is sold in the region. For instance, if a product is manufactured in China and sold globally, it may be nominated in any of the four competition regions.
