Themes:
- Global Challenges – What are the challenges facing us we face in this century? How can we assure an affordable, equitable energy access to 9.5 billion people while preserving the environment for both current and future generations?
- Smart multimode transportation systems – Thinking in terms of and planning for multi-mode transportation systems will become increasingly feasible with electronic communication.
- Smart conversion systems – Advanced technologies for large power plants and CCS technologies as well as decentralized systems and smart technologies for heating/cooling; local electricity production through smaller and unconventional harvesting devices.
- Smart Grids – Power electronic devices and communication and control systems on the demand side allow grids to be designed for improved reliability and reduced required peak capacity.
- Smart industries, services and buildings – Efficiency improvements not only in (energy-intensive) industries but also in the service sector (green data centers, etc.) and in households.
- Smart Strategies – Policies and strategic decision support, also visionary technical concepts (all-electric society, role of fusion, and role of solar electricity from the Sahara, substitution for travel by electronic communication).
