Abstract

This poster looks at the application, selection and implementation of energy efficient lighting and lighting control strategies.

New, leading edge energy efficient lighting and lighting control technologies are described and the strategies used for the selection of these technologies are outlined. The relationship between electrical energy usage and lighting is important to understand and, with the aid of graphs, the reader will gain an insight into what ECM’s (Energy Conservation Measures) effect the different aspects of energy usage.

Various means are employed to install ECM’s in commercial office buildings. An innovative business approach known as Energy Performance Contracting (EPC) has been used very successfully to implement ECM’s into many projects throughout Australia. This process, together with third party funding, are two important means of overcoming implementation barriers to sustainable energy reduction in commercial buildings.

Case studies of successful projects in Australia, Malaysia and Thailand with proven electricity and greenhouse gas reductions are presented. Case studies show technologies used, project costs, energy savings and financial analysis. One case study in Australia for a small office tenancy provided the occupants with a new, state of the art lighting system consisting of low brightness luminaires and controls; all paid for by the running cost savings (energy savings of 85 %).
