Finns win EU energy efficiency action plan race

(28 Jun 07) Finland submitted a national energy efficiency action plan to the European commission on Tuesday.

Finland was the first EU state to do so under the 2006 energy end-use efficiency and energy services directive (EED 02/05/06). The deadline for submitting plans is Saturday, the commission reported on Thursday.

The plans must set out how member states intend to cut energy use by 9 per cent over business-as-usual projections by 2016. They will contribute to a wider goal to cut energy use by 20 per cent by 2020 (EED 19/10/06).

The commission will publish an assessment of the plans by January. See press release.
