EU energy label consultation findings published

(18 Mar 08) Online consultation confirms support for extending the European energy label to other energy-using products

A consultation report published by the European commission on Friday has confirmed stakeholders' overwhelming support for extending the EU's energy labelling scheme for household appliances to other energy-using products.

The report presents the findings of an online consultation carried out as part of a review of the scheme. Eighty per cent of respondents backed proposals to extend the scheme to cover additional energy-using products as well as a limited number of "energy-relevant" products such as windows.

But respondents strongly opposed the idea of adding information such as carbon dioxide emissions and annual running costs to the energy label. In February UK supermarket chain Tesco said it will include such costs in a new energy label to be introduced later this year.

The findings mirrored closely the conclusions of a stakeholder workshop held in February. The minutes of that meeting were also published last week. The commission is expected to table concrete proposals for revising the label, including likely legislative changes, this summer.
