Energy Efficiency must be top priority at EU Summit

(09 Feb 10) Participants at the European Summit on 11 February must focus on the security of supply, competitiveness and climate benefits of improved energy efficiency during the meeting. This is the message of an open letter to Members of the European Council and the Presidents of the European Council, Parliament and Commission, respectively. The letter was signed by eceee and a wide group of European businesses, professional organisations, NGOs and prominent MEPs

The letter links the planned summit discussions of EU’s future economic development to the benefits of energy efficiency to achieve just this.

“There is compelling evidence that immediate efforts to improve energy efficiency would rapidly create hundreds of thousands of high quality, long-lasting, non-transferrable and European-based jobs”, said Nils Borg, Executive Director of eceee, the European Council for an Energy Efficient Economy.

Importantly, a forceful European drive for energy efficiency would give a boost to European companies selling and developing energy efficiency products and services, for European as well as export markets.

The letter also stresses that greater energy efficiency could lessen future energy price volatility and thus prevent undue stress to EU businesses.  “eceee has always argued that increased energy security should be one of the main drivers for energy efficiency”, Mr Borg said.

Additionally, energy efficiency investments can significantly improve health and standard of life through better air quality as well as reduced energy bills and fuel poverty, the letter states.

“However, these results will not be achieved without a clear commitment and focus from the highest levels of EU policy-making” Mr Borg said. “Energy efficiency must be the first order priority for the EU’s economic recovery and new ‘EU2020’ strategy.”
