BEUC, Climate Group and T&E: The EU should set a 100% zero emission target for corporate fleets in 2030

(Transport and Environment, 22 May 2023) Accelerating the electrification of fleets is key to getting consumers into affordable electric vehicles.

The European Commission’s Greening Corporate Fleets Initiative represents a golden opportunity to not only tackle transport emissions, EU’s largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, but also widen the access to cheaper second-hand electric vehicles. The faster fleets electrify their company cars, the faster more households will be able to access more affordable electric vehicles powered by clean European electricity.

6 out of 10 cars sold in the EU are company cars, with those vehicles driving twice as much as private cars. The purchasing decisions of corporate fleets have far wider implications than just for that company, but in fact for the rest of the car market. Company cars tend to spend 3 to 5 years in a fleet before going into the used car market. With 8 out of 10 Europeans buying their cars in the used car market, this is a crucial channel for EU citizens.

That’s why Transport & Environment, BEUC and the Climate Group are calling on the European Commission to:

  • Set out its proposals for the Greening Corporate Fleets Initiative, as promised, without any further delay;
  • Propose binding zero emission purchase targets for corporate fleets of 50% in 2027 and 100% in 2030
