Clean cut: Pure Planet drops prices for green energy customers

(Business Green, 5 Feb 2019) BP-backed renewables supplier claims clean energy can be offered cheaper than fossil fuels after cutting its prices by £12 per year.

App-based renewable energy supplier Pure Planet has announced it is dropping its prices, in a move it says could save its members over £150 a year on a typical household energy bill.

In the latest bid from a smaller player to disrupt Big Six domination of the energy market, from today Pure Planet is lowering its membership fees - equivalent to standing daily charges - by £12 per year for its dual-fuel customers to £8 a month per fuel including VAT. The fee was previously £8.50 a month per fuel.

The company, which partners with its minority shareholder BP to produre renewable power, claimed the cut meant its prices were now £151 lower on average each year than Ofgem's recently introduced £1,137 price cap, and also lower than four of the biggest suppliers on the market, including SSE, E-ON, Scottish Power and npower.

The price cut has been made possible as a result of "efficiencies" in its smart, digital services, it added.

The move also comes ahead of an anticipated rise in Ofgem's price cap, which is tipped to increase by around £100 per year, according to the Bath-based energy supplier.

Launched in 2017 as a digital-focused, renewables-only challenger to the Big Six in the UK, Pure Planet offers one green energy tariff, with renewable electricity sourced from wind and solar, and the remainder sourced from gas from which the company pays to offset carbon emissions.
