EU Commission announces ‘Green Deal Industrial Plan’, but no fresh money

(EurActiv, 18 Jan 2023) The European Commission announced looser state aid rules for EU member states like France and Germany to subsidise clean tech manufacturing in Europe but no fresh money for smaller countries lacking the financial capacity to support their home industry.

As the US and China inject massive subsidies to win the green technology race, the European Union cannot afford to stand still, according to Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission.

“And that means that we Europeans also need to get better at nurturing our own clean-tech industry,” she said at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

“We have a plan, a Green Deal Industrial Plan, our plan to make Europe the home of clean tech and industrial innovation,” she announced on Tuesday (17 January).
