EU Parliament set to vote on truck CO2 emissions after green light from committee

(EurActiv, 15 Feb 2024) The European Parliament’s environment committee has greenlit a new law to drastically reduce the number of newly sold diesel trucks in Europe, after a deal with Germany was struck between EU ambassadors last Friday (9 February).

The draft law sets binding targets for the reduction of CO2 emissions of newly sold trucks and coaches, with average emissions of new trucks having to be reduced by 90% in 2040, compared to 2019 levels.

In practice, this means that most new trucks will by then need to have zero emissions at the tailpipe, and therefore have to run on either electricity or hydrogen combustion.

The law will “give clarity and planning certainty to European industry and competitiveness about investments in electrification and hydrogen,” Bas Eickhout (Greens/EFA), chief negotiator for the European Parliament on the draft law, said in a statement.

After having been greenlit by the Parliament’s Environment Committee on Wednesday, the law will have to be officially adopted by the plenary of the European Parliament, followed by a formal vote of EU27 national ministers.

In a last-minute intervention last week, German Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP/Renew) insisted on ensuring a future for heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) running on carbon-neutral fuels, such as synthetic diesel alternatives known as e-fuels.
