Fossil fuels phase-out: The EU’s unpreparedness is tragic, says think-tank director

(EurActiv, 13 Jul 2022) Matthieu Auzanneau, director of The Shift Project, an energy transition think-tank, spoke to EURACTIV France about the risks to the EU’s oil and gas supplies and the need for energy sobriety to improve security of supply.

The interview was held at Univershifté, an event organised by The Shift Project.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE INTERVIEW

  • The EU is not prepared for the inevitable decline in Russian oil and gas production and will experience constraints on supply volumes;
  • Vladimir Putin is taking advantage of the EU’s “naivety” to reassert a balance of power;
  • Energy sobriety is a security imperative;
  • The Syrian example is a warning for European societies surrounded by powerful regimes whose survival depends on the oil windfall.

In May 2021, The Shift Project published a study on the risks EU’s future oil supplies could face. What does it say?

In 2020, we published the first study with the French Ministry of the Armed Forces, based on data provided by the energy research and business intelligence company Rystad Energy.

This study showed that more than half of the EU’s supplies come from oil-producing countries whose production is expected to decline by 2030.

These are countries that, due to a lack of sufficient reserves, are either already in decline (the entire African continent) or on the verge of declining, like Russia.
