Ireland has third worst record on fossil fuels

(The Times, 13 Feb 2019) Ireland has the third worst record in the EU on meeting 2020 fossil fuel targets. New figures published by the EU show that only the Netherlands and France are further away from their targets to boost the use of renewable energy.

Ireland had the third widest gap among the 27 EU member states between actual renewable energy consumption levels in 2017 — the latest available year for data — and their target rate.

Although Ireland’s use of renewable energy has been rising steadily over the past 15 years, it is still 5.3 percentage points off reaching its target next year.
