BBH Energy Conference, will take place for the third time, in Brussels and emphasise the European and international focus on energy law and counselling.

The conference will be held at a time when the European Commission commences working under its new leadership. Jean-Claude Juncker, the new President of the Commission, started on a very dynamic note. He pointed out that the ”Commission is not a technical committee made up of civil servants who implement the instructions of another institution. The Commission is political. And I want it to be more political. Indeed, it will be highly political.” But he also outlined the urgency of the energy-related matters we have all been working on – often over many years and in full commitment:

Mr Juncker is set to mobilise EUR 300 billion of public and above all private investments over the next three years, also through the targeted use of the existing structural funds and of the European Investment Bank instruments already in place or to be developed as well as coordinated investment in infrastructure projects. He calls for a reindustrialisation of Europe and investments into the industrial sector, research, development and renewable energies. He, furthermore, calls for more efficiency with a minimum of a binding objective of 30%. Mr Juncker will also strive for a forward-lookingclimate change policy and launches the quest for a new European Energy Union. In his view, Europe needs to pool resources, combine infrastructures and unite the EU’s negotiating power vis-à-vis third countries. The Commission President calls for an even wider diversification of the EU’s energy sources in order to reduce the dependency of several of the EU Member States on certain sources of energy.

This statement alone will keep us all fairly busy over the next years. We are delighted to welcome prominent speakers from inside and outside the EU institutions who will touch upon many of these topics.

Finally, we would like to inform you that we have carefully set the date for our conference so that it is directly followed by an energy event organised by the German State of Rhineland-Palatinate and GEODE, the European association of energy distribution companies, which will take place on 13 November 2014 at the Representation of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate, Avenue de Tervueren 60, 1040 Brussels. A separate invitation via e-mail will follow shortly. The festive link between the two events being kindly hosted by the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate is a joint dinner at Club de Warande on Thursday, 13 November 2014.

We are looking forward to welcoming you all to a place that is wonderfully designed for deep reflection and exchanging ideas.
