The German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety will host a high-level workshop with the aim of discussing the current state of energy efficiency policies in the European Union, including the new proposal of the European Commission on energy efficiency of June 2011.

The workshop will also identify good practice examples that have been successfully implemented by Member States and draw on regional differences and related opportunities as well as challenges for policy makers. As scientific frame, recent studies on energy efficiency measures and their specific climate protection potential will be presented.

In the afternoon, participants will have the opportunity to join one of the two working groups where in detail discussions on the following topics will be held:

  • Energy efficiency in buildings: Sustainable cities and the role of Energy Performance Contracting; and
  • Role of energy suppliers in new energy markets: Challenges and opportunities for business and industry in Europe.
