Energy access is an essential condition to economic growth, human development and environmental sustainability.
IEA estimates that the number of people without access to electricity was about 1.1 billion in 2016,
mostly in sub-saharan African countries, and expects that number to decline to less than 700 million by 2030.

Recent technology developments, both in the demand-side and in the supply side, are providing cost-effective to solutions
 to ensure the availability of sustainable energy services to the populations lacking these services.

A special issue to the ISI journal Energy Efficiency published by Springer, entitled “Off-grid Appliances and Smart Controls for Energy Access”,
is being planned, addressing the following topics:

  • Super-efficient off-grid appliances (refrigeration, lighting, ventilation, clean cooking, entertainment, solar cooling and water heating, water purification…);
  • DC Microgrids for Rural Electrification, including Smarter meters and controls;
  • Integration of renewable distributed generation (Solar PV/small hydro/small wind) with storage and load controls/smart appliances;
  • Policies, financing and governance for the promoting the above technologies (e.g. energy communities).

    Potentially interested authors are invited to submit an abstract of 3000-4000 characters for a possible paper in the above mentioned special issue.
    The paper should highlight innovation work and contributions in the above mentioned topics.
