Energy efficiency first, but what next?

eceee 2019 Summer Study

Is efficient sufficient?

The Paris agreement has set a long-term goal of keeping the increase in global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, and the aim to limit the increase to 1.5°C.  Increasing energy efficiency alone will not be sufficient to reach this goal; we also need to look beyond efficiency improvements towards how we can reduce absolute energy consumption.

The summer study moves the frontiers of energy policy and established practices, and looks at what is really needed to break the curves of increasing energy demand and rising temperatures.

Five days that shape tomorrow’s European energy efficiency policy

Fuelled by 400 participants who spend five full days networking and discussing, eceee’s biennial Summer Study has grown into the most important energy efficiency event in Europe. It is here the trends of future policies can be spotted first.

The Summer Studies are the backbone of eceee's ambition to deliver comprehensive evidence-based information on energy efficiency. They offer a mix of peer-reviewed quality paper presentations, informal sessions, inspiring keynotes and just plain round-the-clock networking.

Call for abstracts based on evidence

All presentations by participants are based on an abstract submission for any of the following nine panels (please see the panels page for a complete description).

  1. The dynamics of limiting (energy) consumption
  2. What’s next in energy policy?
  3. Policy and governance
  4. Monitoring and evaluation for greater impact
  5. Smart and sustainable communities
  6. Transport and mobility
  7. Make buildings policies great again
  8. Buildings: technologies and systems beyond energy efficiency
  9. Improving energy efficiency in ICT, appliances and products

New: Extended abstracts complement peer-reviewed papers

Peer-reviewed papers based on submitted abstracts and presented as oral papers or as a visual display, form the backbone of the eceee Summer Study. This year, however, we will allow a limited number of presentations based on extended abstracts as a complement to the papers. These are primarily intended for projects or processes that are not yet finalised or suited for a peer-reviewed paper but still deemed to contribute to the Summer Study information exchange.

Extended abstracts are reviewed blindly by panel leaders just like the abstracts for peer-reviewed papers, but they do not require an accompanying paper. They are presented either orally or as a display.
