The Ecodesign and Energy Labeling Directives offer huge, continous potential to deliver environmental and financial benefits for citizens and businesses in Europe.
They can help save the equivalent of 17% of the EU electricity and 10% of the EU heat consumption by 2020, potentially saving €90 billion on energy bills.
As for climate change, these policies could surpass the European carbon trading scheme and enable 400 million tonnes of CO2 savings by 2020.
The European Commission wants to make 2013 a record year for the adoption of new implementation measures. Meanwhile, plans for 2014-2015 revisions of the Directives will start very soon, in the hope to unleash even more potential.
The role of the European Parliamenty will be crucial in the coming years.
