ERRT Debate: Energy efficiency: global challenge, local solutions

Start/Stop Date:
04 May 2010
Organiser:
European Retail Round Table (ERRT)
Venue:
Résidence Palace, Rue de la Loi 155, Brussels, Belgium
Focus Areas:
Energy efficiency challenge
Type of Event:
Conference

Retailers and European municipal authorities will discuss how they can collaborate to best address together the energy efficiency challenge.

The debate (beginning at 9:45, followed by a lunch at the Committee of Regions) is part of a one day event that will end with the Covenant of Mayors ceremony, to be held at the European Parliament on the afternoon of 4 May. The Covenant of Mayors is a commitment by signatory towns and cities to go beyond the objectives of EU energy policy in terms of reduction in CO2 emissions through enhanced energy efficiency and cleaner energy production and use.

Retailers are leading actors in the fight against climate change through improvements in their operations, their supply chain and their stores.  In 2008, ERRT members voluntarily committed to reduce by at least 20% their energy consumption and increase the use of renewable energy of at least 20% by 2020.
Even if these actions follow from a global policy strategy, they are implemented at the local level and only the sum of these local performances lead to global results.  The interaction between retailers and local authorities is critical: both are rooted in local communities, both are engaged in activities to reduce energy consumption and to use more renewable sources.
