Conference on Product Policy - International Trends in Ecodesign & Energy labelling

Start/Stop Date:
20–21 Feb 2014
European Commission
Charlemagne Building, 170 - rue de la Loi, Brussels
Focus Areas:
Ecodesign, energy labelling
Type of Event:

The European Union’s Ecodesign and Energy Labelling directives contribute to the EU's 2020 targets for energy-efficiency and greenhouse gas reductions, via more than 30 implementing regulations. Energy labels encourage consumers to purchase more energy-efficient products, which also leads to lower household energy bills. In parallel, Ecodesign creates a regulatory level playing field for industry in the EU market by setting minimum harmonised efficiency and performance requirements for products, and contributing to dynamic technological innovations. Governments around the world are implementing similar "race to the top" measures, contributing to a converging worldwide regulatory environment.  This opening session will set the scene for the conference, looking back at past achievements, summarising the present situation and outlining the challenges ahead.

Building on this global momentum, the EU is organising an international conference on ecodesign and energy labelling in Brussels on 20-21 February 2014.

Six workshops over the two days will discuss in detail inter-related product themes

  • Assessing impacts of the Energy Labelling and Ecodesign Directives in the EU and other similar initiatives around the world
  • Exploring possibilities for a more convergent global legislative and standardisation framework
  • Exchanging mutual international good practices and experience between countries active in developing product policy measures, and countries where such policies are now being considered
  • Examining the current state of play of product policies, and the dynamic impact of implementing measures on competitiveness and innovation, market surveillance and standardization

An exhibition will be held in parallel with the international conference on the 2nd floor of the Charlemagne Building.
