Cogeneration in EU policy
Type of Event:
Conference

Cogeneration
Of all Europe’s tools for improving energy efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions cogeneration (Combined Heat and Power or CHP) is one of the lowest risk and most far reaching in near term impact. Eleven per cent of Europe’s electricity today is produced using cogeneration and an estimated additional 120 GWe of European cogeneration potential remains to be exploited. Cogeneration has European Union support for growth and it is generally recognised as a strategic energy choice for Europe.

Conference
The Conference (3-4 May 2012, Brussels) will highlight the major opportunities and challenges in this sector. Cogeneration has a key role to play in helping Europe reach its energy efficiency target of 20% in 2020. The Commission’s proposal for an Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) reinforces the role of cogeneration in Europe’s energy and climate strategy but the economic climate in Europe is making decision makers wary of over commitment.

The Conference brings together in Brussels the strongest advocates and the most influential thinkers to highlight the significant role which energy efficiency and cogeneration in particular must play in reaching strategic EU energy goals. The conference will be focusing on policy developments, market potentials and best practice examples.

Agenda
The morning session of the Conference will bring together energy professionals to discuss the challenges and contributions of cogeneration in EU energy policy. Confirmed speakers include: Philip Lowe (Director-General for Energy, European Commission), Diarmaid Mulholland (Vice President for Europe, GE Energy) and Per Langer (Executive Vice President, Fortum Power and Heat).

The conference has four dedicated session on:

  • Role of cogeneration in sustainable economies
  • Realising the potential of cogeneration
  • Innovation and driving change in cogeneration
  • Market update

Dinner and awards

The Conference Dinner is held on 3 May at 19.00 o’clock and will take place in the BELvue Museum, located next to the Royal Palace in Brussels. As in previous years, COGEN Europe will recognise exceptional contributions to the sector through the COGEN Europe Annual Recognition Awards.
